Modelling Fish Populations in Lakes and Reservoirs

We are looking for an enthusiastic researcher or programmer to model the dynamics of fish populations and communities in freshwater lakes and reservoirs at the Institute of Hydrobiology (http://www.hbu.cas.cz/en/homepage/), Biology Centre of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Czech Republic.
The successful candidate will use long-term quantitative limnological data ranging from nutrients to fish for multiple lakes and reservoirs, curated by the Institute, and develop models to decipher the effects of various anthropogenic drivers (such as recreational fishing, warming and eutrophication) on fish population dynamics in lakes and reservoirs. These models will be used to answer fundamental ecological questions and/or provide expert advice for evidence-based management of recreational fisheries, water quality and reservoir operations.
The successful candidate will work in an experienced and dynamic team of aquatic ecologists at the Institute. She/he will have access to an extensive database with information on environmental parameters, fish growth, age distribution, size, abundance, biomass, recruitment and recreational catches in freshwater reservoirs and lakes in the Czech Republic and elsewhere. The project will be linked to internationally funded, multi-group research projects and will provide ample opportunities to pursue the applications own research ideas at a later stage. Close collaboration with Prof. David Boukal, University of South Bohemia, Ceske Budejovice (http://kbe.prf.jcu.cz/en/david-boukal) is expected.

Desired skills and experience:
• MSc/PhD in ecology, limnology, environmental modelling, physical oceanography, applied mathematics, computer science or related fields
• Proven ability to pursue scientifically challenging questions, high motivation and a vision for creative research
• Interest in modelling individual life histories, population dynamics and food webs
• Good knowledge of programming in R, Matlab, C/C++, Python, Java or similar
• Good written and spoken English
• Promising publication record. commensurate with the career stage
• Good knowledge of aquatic ecosystem processes and previous work in a multidisciplinary environment is preferred
• The ideal candidate should have experience with fish population dynamics models or other models of structured populations, especially those that deal with uncertainty (e.g. Bayesian approaches)

Details of the position:
Target start date is April 2023 (negotiable). The initial appointment will be for 24 months, with an extension of up to 5 further years, depending on performance.
We offer a very competitive salary by local standards (up to ca. 2500 EUR per month with additional performance bonuses for published papers and supervised projects) commensurate with the experience and skills of the applicant. The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop his/her own research agenda consistent with the mission of the Institute.
